Thursday, August 7
Well the Olympic energy has now permeated Beijing. My first brush with the fever came tonight when I joined Gigi Potter and her friends at their hotel for dinner. Gigi is here with her friends Heather & Todd, their young adult children, and Heather's dad & his lovely wife. Mr. Elmoe, Heather's father & owner of the Utah Grizzlies, is a member of the Olympic committee.
At their hotel we saw the US Olympic Basketball team who are also staying there. When I arrived by taxi I was greeted at the street by armed guards & escorted to check point & through security. Gigi had to given them my name & I was required to show my passport for entry.
We had a lovely 9 or more course Chinese dinner & a great evening discussing pollution, Boone Pickens & of course the games.
It was difficult catching a cab home...the streets are bustling with Olympic tourists & the numerous cabs driving past were occupied. Finally given a ride we pleasantly ended my day driving past the irredescent blue Cube (natatorium) & the famous Bird's Nest, the signature stadium of the Beijing Olympics with its brilliant design & glowing red lights.
A perfect way to end this epic eve before the games begin.
