OLYMPICS . . . . |
| |

I live in a residential area known as the River Garden Villas. Predominantly my neighbors are a mix of local Chinese and Westerners. The Westerners in our complex are mostly associated with the different embassies. One can usually only guess where our neighbors are from, but not these two weeks. Every day those going to the Olympics don their gay apparel...bearing the colors and symbols of their country. Of course you do see a lot of red, white and blue...but the country that stands out the most are my Netherland neighbors in their BRIGHT orange, from head to toe. They must be the friendliest people in the world, because for each one that lives here, I think 10 are visiting. A highlight today was getting up as I usually do to teach the workers at the local grocery chain English. They are all so cute and when I told them we were going to learn about the Olympics in English they were so excited. We learned words like Gold (all Chinese are keenly interested in Gold these days), Silver and Bronze. Other words were win, lose, compete, basketball, soccer, volley ball, tennis, badminton and of course ping pong. We talked about the opening ceremony and they all had to tell me a sentence of what they saw on television. They proudly said the theme was that the Chinese invented paper, gun powder, compasses and printing. I told them that I had just heard that they also invented ice cream out of snow and rice. (What country doesn't claim to have invented ice cream?) I didn't say it, but knowing the habits of the Chinese, I worried a little about the color of that original snow flavored ice dessert. When asked by the way, they did know China's gold medal count...everyone in China knows that...up to the minute.
